Canadian Blood Services apologizes

Over the years I have written about the homophobic treatment of gay men by the Canadian Blood Services. I have railed against the injustice of their screening questions and pointed out that even when gay men were allowed to donate the 5 year abstinence required essentially negated the policy.

For years, the blood donor service prevented sexually active gay and bisexual men from donating blood and plasma. Its rules for donors were updated in 2022 to focus on sexual behaviour rather than sexual orientation.

It seems I was right. And the Canadian Blood Service finally clued in, and apologized for how their policies perpetuated homophobic ideas.

Hopefully now the CBS can move forward and serve all Canadians, equally. And allow all Canadians to do likewise.
