I hate May 28th.

I hate this day. Not only was it the anniversary of my mother’s death, it was also the first day I didn’t reach the goal I had set out for myself. It was raining pretty hard when I woke up. Actually I’d been awake for an hour listening to the rain trying to build up the gumption to get up. I managed to pack everything from inside the tent. Which is a pretty neat trick considering I have a tent called “the hummingbird”, which should give you an idea of its size.

With my things safely stowed in the water tight panniers (with the exception of the tent which I was still in, I opening the tent door only to find the rain water had just managed to drip on the corner of one of my shoe covers. Of course the shoe cover sucked all the water up so I had to wring it out before I put it on. Basically the shoe cover is intended to keep water from splashing on your shoes and getting your feet wet, however when pre-soaked, they utterly fail in this regard. No matter, I’d been wet before I wasn’t going to melt.

Once on the road, everytime a semi would pass they would shower me with water. And with the wind they looked like they had some lace veil training behind them. I couldn’t see very far because of the rain, but it didn’t really matter. Also the poor bike wasn’t running well due to the fact that the lube kept washing off the chain. I guess the lube has to go on when the chain is dry otherwise it just won’t stick.

By 1:30 I had to stop. I couldn’t feel my feet anymore and my legs were aching due to the cold. I had only gone about 88km. I was another 55 away from my goal of Swift Current. May 28th sucks.
