As I have written before, I don’t buy into the whole Earth Hour bullshit. That doesn’t mean I don’t care about the planet, or that I am wasteful in my electricity use. It just means I don’t buy into the hype. And don’t kid yourself, it’s hype. They even have educational tools (branded by sponsors of course) to help indoctrinate your children early. Take a look at the about us page. Am I the only one who thinks it’s strange to have a site about saving the earth while you send out flying bags which are going to land who know’s where? But it’s okay, the Lorax has somewhere to advertise.
Here is a better idea. Demand that your government begins looking for alternative sources of power. Not solar or wind either since those are almost as environmentally unfriendly as the other solutions. We need a better solution and liquid-fluoride thorium reactor looks like it might be that solution. I must admit, it strains my brain a bit since I can’t remember that much about my chem 12 class.
This starts with a 5 minute remix in case you are in a hurry.
Of course the Canadian government probably wouldn’t go for it since they make a bundle from Uranium exports, plus cheap plentiful energy would put an end to the oil sands. Prosperity is directly relational to energy consumption. As a country becomes more prosperous they begin to consume more power. Luckily both India and China, the most populous countries in the world are researching this technology. When there is a shift in power production, a new power source is found there is a profound social change.
If we want to change the world, to save it, we need cheap and abundant energy, much more than we need to turn our lights off for an hour.
